HORS D’OEUVRES

  1. Bloody Caprese Skewers

Name: Stabbed in the Heart Skewers

Ingredients:

  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Mini mozzarella balls
  • Fresh basil leaves
  • Balsamic glaze
  • Skewers or toothpicks

Instructions:

  1. Thread one cherry tomato, one basil leaf, and one mozzarella ball onto each skewer.
  2. Arrange on a black tray or slate board.
  3. Drizzle balsamic glaze over the skewers to resemble “blood.”

Presentation:
Serve on a dark slate board with evidence markers (tiny number cards) scattered between. Optional: Stick the skewers upright in a foam block disguised as a “victim.”

  1. Mini Crab Cakes with Spicy Remoulade

Name: Crabby Alibi Bites

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb lump crabmeat
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp Old Bay seasoning
  • 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 2 tbsp chopped parsley
  • Oil for frying

Remoulade:

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tbsp capers
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp paprika

Instructions:

  1. Mix crab, egg, mayo, mustard, Old Bay, parsley, and panko until combined.
  2. Form into small 2-inch cakes.
  3. Chill for 30 minutes.
  4. Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.
  5. Fry cakes 3–4 minutes per side until golden.
  6. Mix remoulade ingredients in a bowl.

Presentation:
Place crab cakes on a silver tray with a dollop of sauce on each. Garnish with chopped parsley. Set a fake “Case Closed” stamp card beside the tray.

  1. Stuffed Mushrooms

Name: Mushrooms of Suspicion

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb whole button mushrooms
  • 4 oz cream cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated parmesan
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 tbsp chopped parsley
  • Salt and pepper

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F.
  2. Clean mushrooms and remove stems.
  3. Chop stems and sauté with garlic until soft.
  4. Mix cooked stems with cream cheese, parmesan, breadcrumbs, parsley, salt, and pepper.
  5. Stuff caps with mixture and bake for 20 minutes.

Presentation:
Serve in neat rows on a mirrored tray with red napkins underneath to suggest a “bloody” background.

MAIN COURSE

  1. Braised Short Ribs over Mashed Potatoes

Name: Death by Decadence

Ingredients:

  • 4 lbs beef short ribs
  • Salt and pepper
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 carrots, chopped
  • 2 cups red wine
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 sprigs rosemary
  • 2 sprigs thyme

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 325°F.
  2. Season ribs with salt and pepper.
  3. In a Dutch oven, sear ribs in olive oil until browned. Remove.
  4. Add onion and carrots, sauté until soft.
  5. Stir in tomato paste and garlic. Cook 1 minute.
  6. Add wine and broth. Scrape bottom of pot.
  7. Add herbs and return ribs. Cover and bake for 2.5–3 hours.

Mashed Potatoes:

  • 2 lbs Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • Salt to taste
  1. Boil potatoes until fork-tender.
  2. Mash with butter, cream, and salt until smooth.

Presentation:
Plate as a single portion: mashed potatoes molded into a ring (use a food mold), ribs stacked on top with drizzled sauce. Serve on black square plates.

  1. Stuffed Bell Peppers

Name: Buried Secrets Peppers

Ingredients:

  • 6 bell peppers, tops removed and cored
  • 1 lb ground beef or turkey
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1 cup marinara sauce
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F.
  2. Sauté onion and meat until cooked. Stir in rice, sauce, and seasoning.
  3. Stuff mixture into peppers. Top with cheese.
  4. Place in a baking dish with a bit of water. Cover with foil.
  5. Bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake 10 more minutes.

Presentation:
Place upright on a silver platter with a red sauce “pool” at the base. Label with a tag reading: “Autopsy Findings – Contents Unknown”

DESSERTS / SWEETS

  1. Mini Cheesecake Bites with Raspberry Drizzle

Name: Poisoned Heart Cheesecakes

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup graham cracker crumbs
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 4 tbsp melted butter
  • 16 oz cream cheese
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Topping:

  • Raspberry jam or puree

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 325°F. Line mini muffin tin with liners.
  2. Mix crumbs, sugar, and butter. Press into tin bottoms.
  3. Beat cream cheese, sugar, eggs, and vanilla until smooth.
  4. Spoon into cups. Bake for 18–20 minutes. Cool.
  5. Top with raspberry drizzle.

Presentation:
Serve on a tiered dessert stand. Drizzle raspberry sauce to look like bleeding hearts. Add plastic knives stuck in a few as a gag.

  1. Chocolate Cupcakes with Red Velvet Centers

Name: Murder in the Middle Cupcakes

Ingredients:

  • Chocolate cake mix (or homemade)
  • Red velvet cake mix
  • Chocolate frosting

Instructions:

  1. Bake red velvet mini cupcakes and chill.
  2. Prepare chocolate cupcake batter.
  3. Pour chocolate batter into liners, press a red velvet mini into the center.
  4. Bake according to chocolate cake instructions.
  5. Frost with chocolate icing.

Presentation:
Slice one open on a display tray to reveal the red center. Decorate with crime scene tape toppers or edible blood splatter.

  1. Sugar Glass Shards

Name: Shattered Evidence Candy

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup light corn syrup
  • 1/2 cup water
  • Red food coloring (optional for blood drops)

Instructions:

  1. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a pot, heat sugar, syrup, and water until 300°F (hard crack stage).
  3. Pour onto sheet. Let harden. Break into jagged pieces.
  4. Optional: Flick red food coloring or edible gel on top.

Presentation:
Serve sticking out of black-frosted cupcakes or on a tray labeled “Scene Debris.” Place shards in a bowl labeled “Handle with Caution.”
